This is the essence of democracy. Hearing from articulate, well-reasoned constituents helps convince an elected official of the merits of a point of view, as well as the breadth of support for it. 

You don’t have to be an expert on an issue in order to write to your legislators. It is your interest and concern, in addition to your knowledge, that count.

Writing letters and e-mails and calling offices opens the door for communication and building a relationship with elected members of Congress, state government, and city/county governments. These relationships may turn into meetings and legislative action.
