The educational mission of the JCRC of Greater Washington's Holocaust Commission is to: Promote an understanding of the uniqueness and magnitude of the Holocaust, its consequences and critical lessons; Serve as a resource for students, teachers and other members of the Greater Washington community to learn about the Holocaust, racism, genocide and the dangers of prejudice; Help members of the Greater Washington community apply the lessons of the Holocaust and other historical events to the moral decisions they make in their own lives. The 2013 Holocaust Commemoration On Sunday evening, April 7, 2013 JCRC's Holocaust Commission continued its over 3 decades long tradition of hosting annual, community-wide observances of Yom Ha'Shoah with commemorations in Maryland and Virginia. These events celebrated the power of human spirit and the enduring faith of those who witnessed and survived the Holocaust as atendees remembered those who were killed.  You may view the programs from the Maryland and Virginia services and photos from each event.  View photos from the Sunday, April 7, 2013 JCRC Holocaust Commemorations in Maryland and Virginia.  (left to right) Marcel Drimer, Frank Cohn, Janine Bland and John Baer light the first candle at the Virginia Commemoration. As these Holocaust survivors were called upon for this task, the JCRC recognized their tremendous accomplishments and successes in this country and remembered the great losses to our worldwide community in the lives that were cut short. Former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen opened our program with a tribute to his mother, Holocaust survivor Etty Lumbroso Allen. Governor Allen recounted the moving story of learning about his Jewish identity later in life. Maryland Lt. Gov Anthony Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, and Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett read names of Holocaust victims as part of Unto Every Person There is a Name. Youth Holocaust Education In 2013, JCRC is committed to bringing Holocaust survivors to meet with Greater Washington area students and share their living testimony.  Contact us to request a speaker or register as a speaker in Maryland, D.C. or Virginia. This year, in Northern Virginia survivors visited nine synagogues, churches and public schools to share their personal testimony with over 600 students.  In Maryland, the JCRC has worked with Montgomery College's Portraits of Life Program bringing survivors to 5 public schools and synagogues to share their personal stories with over 750 children.   Holocaust Survivor Campaign     Dear Friends and Colleagues:  The Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) has created a video to raise community awareness and highlight the critical need to raise funds to support the agency's JSSA's Holocaust Survivor Program.   Please help us promote JSSA's Holocaust Survivor Campaign by viewing the short video and forwarding the link to your friends, family, and colleagues. We believe that a community-wide effort to raise awareness and support is vital.
