Teen Program: The Other Dr. Seuss

On Sunday, April 19, more than 150 students from NoVA (and as far south as Stafford County,VA) gathered to learn about "The Other Dr. Seuss: Reinterpreting the pre-WWII, WWII and post-WWII political cartoons/works of Theodore "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, famed children's writer. Students watched the animated cartoon version of Dr. Seuss' "Sneeches," followed by a slide show of his political cartoons from before and during WWII. Following a brief discussion about the relevance and impact of satire as political commentary today, students gathered in groups to create their own political cartoons, depicting issues ranging from global nuclear proliferation to LGBTQ social justice issues. The students then shared their political cartoons with the whole group. After this sharing, students then participated in B'nai B'rith's "Unto Every Person There Is a Name," reading names of child victims of the Holocaust.
