Maryland Yom Hashoah 2013
On Sunday, April 7, 2013, the JCRC continued its decades long tradition of hosting annual, community-wide observance of Yom Ha'Shoah The Greater Washington community celebrated the enduring faith of those who survived the Holocaust and remembered and mourned those who were murdered. Survivors spoke and were honored, victims' names were read as part of B'nai B'rith's Unto Every Person There is a Name program, and the community pledged to continue prioritizing remembrance. Elected officials joined our community in remembering the Holocaust on this solemn day.
The Maryland Community-Wide Yom HaShoah commemoration was held at Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac. The evening included a community artifact exhibit, artwork, and a memorial to the destroyed communities of Europe. The commemoration featured a multi-generational memorial candle lighting, Kaddish, and a touching performance by Kol Sasson, University of Maryland's Jewish a capella group. Holocaust Survivors in our community read original poetry, including 95-year-old Herman Taube who presented an original Yiddish poem for the 45th time at the annual Holocaust commemoration. Keynote remarks were provided by Dr. Walter Reich, Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Professor of International Affairs, Ethics, and Human Behavior at the George Washington University.
