2014 Maryland Yom HaShoah 4/27
On Sunday, April 27, 2014, the JCRC continued its decades long tradition of hosting annual, community-wide observance of Yom Ha'Shoah The Greater Washington community celebrated the enduring faith of those who survived the Holocaust and remembered and mourned those who were murdered. Survivors spoke and were honored, victims' names were read as part of B'nai B'rith's Unto Every Person There is a Name program, and the community pledged to continue prioritizing remembrance. Elected officials and dignitaries from the White House and Embassy of Israel joined our community in remembering the Holocaust on this solemn day.
The Maryland Community-Wide Yom HaShoah commemoration was held at B'nai Israel Congregation in Rockville. The evening included Montgomery College's Portraits of Life art exhibit, a memorial to the destroyed communities of Europe, a multi-generational memorial candle lighting, Kaddish, and a touching performance by The Remembrance Quartet whose members include a Holocaust survivor. Holocaust Survivors in our community read poetry and passages from books written by loved ones. There was a memorial tribute to Herman Taube, z"l, who passed away at 96 years old and who had been involved with Yom HaShoah commemorations for over 40 years. Keynote remarks were provided by Holocaust survivor, Nesse Godin, who has dedicated her life to remembering and telling the world what hatred can do.
