Though a frequent topic of discussion, antisemitism in the United States is a poorly understood historical phenomenon. In this talk, Britt Tevis offers a historical lens on anti-Jewish bigotry, discrimination, and violence by illuminating underappreciated and unexplored dimensions of anti-Jewish inequality from America's past.

Assistant Professor of History
Britt Tevis is an assistant professor of history and the Backer Professor in Jewish Studies at Syracuse University. Her work focuses on the intersection of Jews and American law. Professor Tevis has twice received the Wasserman Essay Prize for the best article in Jewish history from the American Jewish Historical Society: in 2016 for “‘The Hebrews Are Appearing in Court in Great Numbers’: Toward a Reassessment of Early Twentieth-Century American Jewish Immigration History, and again in 2022 for “Trends in the Study of Antisemitism in United States History. She earned her Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her book, Sanctioned Bigotry: A Documentary History of Antisemitism in the United States, was published by Yale University Press in May 2026. Professor Tevis is also finishing her latest book manuscript, “May It Displease the Court: Jewish Lawyers and the Democratization of American Law.”
